MONDO / DEATH WALTZ RECORDS PRESENTS
FRIZZI 2 FULCI LIVE!
Austin, Texas
October 2, 2015

It is packed, sold the hell out. In a solid, Old World style brick and mortar church, the crowd is anxiously awaiting what would be Italian composer’s Fabio Frizzi first ever time on US soil with his small but talented group of professional musicians behind him, playing live the renowned music from legendary Horror Director Lucio Fulci’s films.

The sea of inhabitants inside the church this evening consist of classical music connesieurs and genre geeks. The air is electric, as if everyone else in this place shares my feelings. We are about to be a part of history and experience a legend paying homage to another legend. A truly rare and treasured delight, this is one of only four American tour stops plus one in Toronto. The church is dimly lit, with red lights strategically placed to give it that ominous ambience. A large screen is behind the stage where the Composer and fellow musicians will perform. Sheer perfection!

MONDO, in it’s first ever live concert event, truly made this one auspicious. Lucio Fulci has directed some of the greatest genre masterpieces of our time, inspiring so many other filmmakers along the way and earning a devoted fan base. The Beyond, Zombi II, City of the Living Dead, The New York Ripper…the list is sizable and impressive. Fulci shared his greatness with the world when directors still heavily relied on the score of a movie to convey so much more than they do now (in my humble opinion).

The Master Composer appears on stage with his ensemble to a great and appreciative applause. He seems sincerely very humbled and moved by this. As the applause does not subside, many on their feet, Frizzi holds his hand over his heart and bows his head slightly. He is obviously touched by the way we are all receiving him. I felt at this moment a huge surge of triumph not only for Fabio Frizzi, but also for this unprecedented inaugural live concert event created by the awesomeness which is MONDO and Death Waltz.

The crowd was immediately captivated as the musicians and Frizzi entered into the first piece. The atmosphere was perfect for the haunting and electrifying score. Fantastic 35mm clips from Fulci’s films were edited beautifully along with the music created by the eight piece ensemble. Rhythmic and hypnotic chanting was crafted so well from the voice of one of the female members, the hymn like progressiveness was wonderful! The soundscapes were absolutely sublime, seamlessly entering into another piece with breathtaking transitions of images projected on the screen.

Panaramic shots sliding into grotesque close ups. Marvelous! I felt they showed some of Fulci’s most iconic film images and was very pleased with this. What was also pleasing to me was that, as the concert progressed, so did the gore upon the screen. My poor friend who accompanied me to the event is not a fan of gore/horror by any means, and I felt her get exceedingly grossed out. Fulci’s magic works again!

One of the highlights to the evening for myself was when Frizzi took a moment to speak to the crowd about a new project he was working on with someone he described as an “excellent filmmaker” in his heavily accented voice. This project was a short film, and went by the name of Saint Frankenstein, written and directed by Scooter McCrae. Well, I was beyond excited to get a glimpse of this creation, and what I was able to peek at was astonishing. Sensory overload almost for me as delicately filmed moment of two beings, looking as if attempting intimacy, yet one is in pieces. Literally. You have to check it out. I know I want to see it in its entirety.

Fabio Frizzi and company effortlessly went in to another gorgeous piece after another for nearly two hours. The evening was absolutely noted in my Book of Memory under ‘Epic Evenings’. I was in awe. I was so completely and utterly entertained. I was so very thankful to attend, and it will be forever remembered. I’m pretty damn sure everyone else sitting there with me felt the same, and I’m pretty damn sure that church hasn’t been that full………in ages.
