Morbidly Beautiful

Your Home for Horror

Posts

We proudly debut the female-driven “I Spit On Your Podcast” on our network, beginning with a discussion of “Teeth” and its feminist social commentary.

In this episode, we are exploring Coming of Age Horror. The theme we will be looking at is monstrous power formed during the transition into womanhood, and the film up for discussion is 2007’s Teeth.

Editor’s Note: We are thrilled to welcome the incredible Spinsters of Horror to the Morbidly Beautiful podcasting family. Jess and Kelly co-host the well produced, highly entertaining and insightful monthly podcast known as I SPIT ON YOUR PODCAST. Every month, they explore the world of horror entertainment, with each episode centering around a particular theme. This is a time once a month where Jess puts down her bloody knitting needles and Kelly steps away from the TV to discuss horror movies and other horror mediums with thoughtful analysis, research, and passion.

Their motto is: The Future of Fear is Female.

“The horror genre is dominated by the masculine perspective of horror with countless websites and podcasts. With the lack of female voices in horror and horror podcasting, we want to help change that. We feel it is important to celebrate and encourage female horror fans while at the same time remaining inclusive to all who love what horror has to offer.” – Spinsters of Horror

That’s definitely something we are proud to get behind.

I SPIT ON YOUR PODCAST is a well-established podcast with a strong following, and we are so thrilled that they’ve decided to bring their compelling content — and a show we are huge fans of — to the Morbidly Beautiful Podcasting Network.

We’re jumping in with Episode 20 of the show, which happens to be a particularly killer one — and a great one to get started with if you’ve never listened to the show. Of course, if you fall in love with the show as much as we think you will, you can always head here to catch up on past episodes. You can also find them on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and Soundcloud.

ABOUT THIS EPISODE (MORBIDLY BEAUTIFUL PREMIERE):

Teeth

Episode 20: Teeth – Every Rose has its Thorns (1 hour, 32 minutes)

For Women in Horror Month, we explore the coming-of-age horror sub genre with a look at 2007’s Teeth. Teeth is a film ripe with the social commentary on the 2006 Bush Administration’s push to return to traditional family values and to boost abstinence-only education. We discuss Purity Balls, the “purity” myth, the virginity movement and the damaging effects it has on young people — in particular women — and Dawn, our beloved protagonist.

We discuss the myths and origins surrounding the idea of Vagina Dentata and how very unique this film is as it defines the monstrous feminine through a young woman’s experience in a hostile, male-dominated world. Male fears of the female body and sexuality have long been the subject of many religious beliefs and laws which are often reflected in horror films.

And since it’s a very special month (we recorded this episode in February), we’ve got a bonus treat. We’ll be spotlighting one of our favorite female-driven podcasts we think you should definitely check out: the wonderful GIRLS, GUTS, GIALLO podcast!

Check out this month’s episode below. And be sure to tune in the first Wednesday of every month for new episodes of I SPIT ON YOUR PODCAST on the Morbidly Beautiful Network.
