The Wickedly Talented Ladies of Macabre Merch: Six Questions for the Beauty and Brains Behind the Killer Shop, Horror Melts

The first handmade wax shop I discovered that helped launch my current wax melt obsession is Horror Melts, and it remains one of my very favorite shops. Run by a passionate and incredibly supportive member of the Horror community, Horror Melts is an online shop where wax addicts like me can purchase a variety of Horror-themed melts and bars that look and smell absolutely amazing! Made with lots of love and genuine care, these are the kind of melts that look so good you almost feel bad melting them — truly mini works of art. But trust me, they smell even better than they look and fill your whole abode with to die for scents that will make you wonder how you ever lived without these melts in your life.

1. What was the inspiration for starting your own business and how did you get started?

I would say the number one inspiration for starting my own shop has always been horror and the community around it. I’ve always loved creating, and when I discovered wax melts I became obsessed! I love being able to switch out fragrances easily no matter what I am looking for without having to store a bunch of candles.

I didn’t really see other shops creating melts geared towards what I love, so I decided to make my own! It started out as something I was just making for myself and my friends. It was my boyfriend who suggested I start selling, and the rest is history!

2. When and how did you fall in love with horror?

One of the first horror films I remember watching when I was younger is ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?’. My mother showed it to me. After I fell in love with it, we began to watch a lot of Alfred Hitchcock films together, which sparked my love for the genre. From those, I always had a great appreciation for the classics. It wasn’t until I was in middle school that my obsession really started. I binge watched the whole Nightmare on Elm Street series, and after that I couldn’t get enough!

3. Where does inspiration for your products come from? What is your creative process like?

I create melts that are homages to the films and characters I love and admire! A lot of my life, I’ve felt like an outcast. I believe that a lot of the reason us crazy horror fans love what we do stems from sharing that same feeling. We love to root for the bad guys! It can be a character in particular or my favorite scene in a film that speaks to me. I’ll really think of that character or situation and create a scent that is personal to them.

Horror films have been such an outlet for me, and combining that with a creative outlet like melts has brought so much happiness into my life.

4. What’s the best part about running your own business, and what’s the hardest part?

As a horror fanatic, my favorite part of running this shop has been having the freedom to create products that I want to see. Everything I make is dedicated to a film or a character I truly love. It is amazing to be able to share my passions with people who are just like me.

Whenever I see a photo or get great feedback from a customer it’s a giddy feeling that I don’t think will ever stop. Just knowing there are people out there who love the same thing I do is awesome, that is where the horror community really pushes me to continue creating bigger and better.

Recently, one of the hardest parts for me has been keeping my interactions up and getting the word out so people know what I am up to. It’s easy to get discouraged when you put a lot into a product and then go to share it, only to be immediately pushed to the bottom of someone’s feed.

5. Tell me why you think it’s important for people to support small business? Is it especially important for people to support female-owned business (if so, why)?

Even before I opened up my own, supporting small business has always been a priority to me. We live in a world where big business and ‘consumerism’ control so many aspects of our lives. I believe it is SO important to know where your money is going. These are people who have the same passions as you and know what you are looking for through that.

Big business completely lacks that passion. They crank out items that they believe you want to buy, but it is all so careless. When you choose to buy from a small business you are supporting something much bigger.

Although I believe there is a place in this community for everyone, female owned shops have brought so much into my life. We are all trying to get by doing something that we adore, but at the core of everything there is a beautiful community of female shop owners who love and support each other. I never dreamed that I would get so much support from other small businesses, but we are truly all rooting for each other.

Like I said, there is a place for everyone in this community. When you choose to support a female owned business, you are supporting us continuing to share our passions with everyone.

6. How can people follow/interact with you on social and purchase your products? And is there anything else you’d like to add or promote?

My only form of social media right now is Instagram. I am pretty active on there, and you can follow me @horrormelts. That is the best place to stay updated on everything Horror Melts related! You can find my shop at www.squareup.com/store/horror-melts.

Currently, I am working on branching out into new products like incense and scoop-able wax melts. So be sure to follow that account for updates! I will be releasing more mini scent shot collections throughout the year as well!
