1. What was the inspiration for starting your own business and how did you get started?

Where I used to live, there was a farmers market every Friday that consisted of different vendors; anywhere from crafts and handmade items, to food And music!  I wound up at this stand, where this girl had hundreds of beautiful hairbows and different accessories!  My Husband bought me a Jack Skellington Hairbow one night! Months passed, and he bought me a new machine! I decided to take a chance and start making hairbows. I locked myself in my room and worked until I could come up with a great structure for bows. I started with nothing!! No formulas or measurements, just me, my machine and fabric remnants!  To be quite honest, I never thought people would Love what I create, but I proved myself very wrong!

2. When and how did you fall in love with horror?

When I was a little girl about the age of 4 or 5, my Mom would let me watch horror movies; of course making me turn my head at all the “bad” parts.  Movies like all the Halloweens, “The Exorcist”, “He knows when you’re alone”, “Jaws” & classic horror movies like “Frankenstein”, “Dracula”, “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” etc etc. I wanted to watch more! Nothing was ever too scary for me!

3. Where does inspiration for your products come from? What is your creative process like?

My inspiration comes from movies! I’ll sit down and watch a movie and tell myself that I need to make a hairbow with a specific character on it! For example: “Halloween”, I know that I would love a bow with Michael Myers on it, but not just any old hairbow! I want something that’s going to wow others! Something attention grabbing! Why not add “blood drip” to the bow?? After all, Michael Myers loves to shed blood from all who get in his way of Laurie and Jamie 😉

4. What’s the best part about running your own business, and what’s the hardest part?

The absolute best part of running my own business is that I’m my own boss! I start, finish and create when, where and how I want! I make my own schedule and I’m not on anyone’s time. I meet tons of wonderful and down to earth people. People put their trust in me to create something for them, and I treat it as if I was making it for myself. If I’m not happy with it, I start over until its perfect.

The hardest part of running my own business is, I am a one woman circus. Everything you see in my shop, is created by me and only me. I have no employees, and I don’t pay anyone to help.  Sometimes I get so many orders that it can be overwhelming, but I get through it like a champ and as fast as possible.

5. Tell me why you think it’s important for people to support small business? Is it especially important for people to support female-owned business (if so, why)?

Small businesses are people who, on their own time, can spend hours at fabric and craft stores or even online to choose the best quality materials they can, to create the best merchandise for people to purchase. These small businesses spend their own hard-earned money to bring you great quality items. You want to know what else they do? Spend hours creating with LOVE!  This isn’t always something people do because they have to; Maybe some need to earn an honest living, but some also do it because they want to! IT’s A passion, not A job! My Dad once told me, “If you love what you do, you’ll never have to work a day in your life!”

It is important to support female-owned businesses because to me, there is no life without women!! You, Me and even the president wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for a woman birthing us!!!! Women help the world go ’round. Women are powerful, successful and phenomenal.  We are the backbone of almost any man and the backbone of our world.

6. How can people follow/interact with you on social and purchase your products? And is there anything else you’d like to add or promote?

Everyone can follow me on Facebook at Little Shop Of Horrors 13. You can follow and make purchases through my Instagram at @Littleshopofhorrors13. Custom requests can be sent via email to [email protected].

I’ve had many people come to me when they’ve lost a loved one, and ask me to create a memorial piece for them. It could be a hairbow with their loved one’s picture on it or pins to wear. Some had me make magnets or even charms to add to their bouquet for their wedding day. If you want a photo on a bow, pin, magnet or keychain of your kids, spouse, or even your pet, I’m just the gal for you!  Email me the image you would like and details about this piece, and I can get it done.
