Got a secret? Keep it to yourself with this SFX makeup look!

I took inspiration for this look from a well-known SFX artist on Instagram (@raniratt). The look she did was basically no mouth, which is pretty freaky on its own if you think about it. But, being the gore lover I am, I felt the urge to make it all bloody and horrible.

Before you try to create this sfx makeup look, bear in mind you won’t be able to speak, eat or drink during the process. So I advise you make sure you aren’t expecting any visitors or phone calls at the time.

Firstly, you’ll need to gather your equipment. For this sfx makeup look you will need:

  • Liquid latex
  • Tissue paper, or toilet roll if it’s easier to get your hands on it, just make sure to separate the sheets for thinner pieces of of tissue
  • Foundation
  • Baby powder or Face powder
  • Disposable sponges
  • Red face paint or red lipstick
  • Fake blood
  • Makeup brushes
  • Safety pins
  • Scissors

Step 1:

I started by doing normal makeup on the top half of my face, but you can skip this part if you want to. Cut some tissue into smaller pieces but make sure they’re still big enough to cover your mouth area.

Step 2:

Purse your lips together and then pour some liquid latex into a bowl, and with a disposable sponge dab the latex over and around your mouth. Whilst it is still wet, put a strip of tissue paper over the latex and press it down, smoothing it out to get rid of any wrinkles and bubbles. Wait for this to dry. You can use a hairdryer on a low setting to speed up the process, but I personally took this time to watch cat videos on Facebook. I repeated this process with about five layers of latex and tissue waiting until it was fully dry to go onto the next step.

Step 3:

You will know when the latex is completely dry when it is clear and slightly tacky to the touch. You then need to use either baby powder or face powder over the area to get rid of any shine and tackiness.

Step 4:

Using foundation go over the entire area and blend out into the skin. You may want to go over the area again in powder to set this in place. You can either leave the look here for a freaky no mouth style, or carry on and make it gory!

Step 5:

Using some scissors VERY carefully make a cut where your mouth is. At last you can (sort of) speak! Take some safety pins and taking care not to stab yourself with them, connect the top and the bottom of the cut with them.

Step 6:

This is the fun part! Using red face paint or lipstick, paint around the area you have cut, the safety pins and under the latex if any is showing. Don’t worry about smudging it, this will only make it look gorier. Use some darker reds if you have them for extra depth. Then use some fake blood and paint over the top of the red. You can use some tissue to dab the blood around your mouth and allow it to drip down.

Until next time, stay scary!
