My arm had just been sliced open, and staples were used to hold the skin together

This sfx makeup look came to me on a whim. I had been struggling to find inspiration for any SFX this past week. Then I saw a stack of staples sat on my desk and decided to use them! Easy enough to make with a gruesome impact, you can create this look anywhere on your body and make it as gory as you desire. I wanted this to look as if my arm had just been sliced open, and staples were used to hold the skin together as best as possible (with some areas still left fleshy and gross).

For this sfx makeup look, you’ll need:

  • Scar Wax
  • Red, brown and black face paints/eyeshadow
  • Fake blood
  • Makeup brushes
  • Staples
  • A knife or something to make fine lines with (I used a metal sculpting tool)
  • Spirit gum
  • Face powder
  • Vaseline

Step 1:

Roll out a thin worm of scar wax making it as long as you want your slice to be. Coat one side with spirit gum and wait for it to become tacky, the place on your forearm and press the wax down to stick it in place.

Step 2:

Start blending the wax into your skin with you finger, using Vaseline to smooth down the wax into the skin as well. Powder the area to take away shine and tackiness.

Step 3:

Using the knife or sculpting tool, slice a line into the wax (so satisfying) making it deep, slightly taper the edges for a realistic effect.

Step 4:

Paint the inside of the slice with the black and brown, add some red. Use red again on the walls of the slice to look like skin.

*OPTIONAL STEP*

I used my sculpting tool to create open flesh. I did this by pulling one edge of the wax out with this tool and repeating the process on the other side. I touched up the color by adding red to the open flesh.

Step 5:

Add liberal amounts of fake blood to the slit wound and around it, making some drips of blood from either end. Now the best part…you can use the staples! I added them within a centimeter of each other by just gently pressing them into the wax with my finger. Finally, add some fake blood around and on the staples.

Your gory sfx makeup masterpiece is now complete! The less blood you add, the older the wound will look. But it’s up to you how you style this piece. Have fun with it, and be sure to prank some friends and take pictures of this gory creation.

Until next time, stay scary!
