On this week’s episode, George and his special guest discuss the surprisingly layered, Canadian, coming-of-age, cult werewolf film “Ginger Snaps”.

Two teenaged sisters, both obsessed with death, share an unbreakable bond that gets tested when one of them starts transforming into a bloodthirsty werewolf. With a strong female cast and biting satire of teenage life, it’s not hard to see why our guest calls it the “Best Horror Movie Ever Made”.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S EPISODE:

Episode 56: “Ginger Snaps” with Brittni Martin (1 hour, 36 minutes)

This week in the Horror House, Brittni Martin of Montreal’s Cardboard Utopia Games is here to talk about her pick for the best horror movie ever made: 2000’s Canadian classic, Ginger Snaps!

We talk about her history with horror and the way this movie taps into exactly what she was going through when it came out… specifically, being a depressed teenager and feeling like everything was the end of the world. She discusses how this film speaks so authentically to the teenage experience.

Similar to what Cronenberg went through years earlier in Canada, Ginger Snaps had challenges getting made. So we discuss both the cultural conversation around teen violence that presented a stumbling block, plus the harsh Canadian winters. We also dive into the proud horror lineage from the North, including such favorites as the TV adaptation of Goosebumps, the Final Destination franchise, and Supernatural.

We explore the physicality of Ginger Snaps, and how the desire to use prosthetics instead of CGI allows for a more lived in feeling and creates a bigger impact for the audience. Though the audience took some time to develop, thanks to a botched distribution, it found its footing on VHS and later HBO, where it developed into a cult classic thanks to its impressive utilization and subversion of classic horror tropes and cinematic language.

As we wrap up, Brittni and I discuss our interpretations of the movie and if we think there was any of Ginger left in that wolf before we sum up what makes this film such a great pick for “Best Horror Film Ever Made”. Throw out those Hollywood rules, and don’t miss awoo00oout!
