On this episode of “Not Your Final Girl”, we reach back into the annals of horror for some classic gothic thrills and surprisingly subversive spooks.

THIS EPISODE: VINTAGE HALLOWEEN (ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL)

Are you ready to be scared and gay? Well, you better be, cause it’s the spooky month AND our freakin’ one year anniversary. In this episode, we’re digging into three Gothic tales of horror from when the world was still black and white. These movies have everything: repressed queerness, subversive empathy, rabid squirrels, the looming threat of forced institutionalization, candles, and a soggy dead guy, just for starters.

We’ve got three different studios and three different decades going on here, but some intriguingly common themes — it’s almost as if people have always tackled topics like gender and sexuality and disability. Hmm.

Aside from our movies, we talk about our own Halloween traditions, like how Ariel wrings every bit of festivity from the season, while Candace just kind of lets Halloween come to her. You’ll also get a sneak peek at what’s coming up for the future of the pod. New movies? Old movies? More Hammer films? Satanist lesbians? You know it.

Thanks for one year, you beautiful ghouls! Without you, we’d just be yelling about horror movies at each other. Which would still be fun, of course, but not nearly as fun as yelling with you all.

MOVIES DISCUSSED:

  • Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
  • The Uninvited (1944)
  • Scream/Taste of Fear (1961)
