Artful and hallucinogenic, “Bliss” is a stylish and seductive exploration of obsession that offers an innovative take on age-old tropes.
It’s Tiana’s choice this week as the Sucky Summer continues, & she went with “Bliss” (2019)!
FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF:
Bliss is a 2019 horror film written and directed by Joe Begos. It concerns an artist named Dezzy (Dora Madison Burge, credited as Dora Madison), who descends into madness after taking a hallucinogenic drug to overcome a creative block.
Artsy and conceptual, the film boasts a twisted thrill factor and excellent acting. Dora Madison delivers a standout performance. High production values and a strong visual style elevate the film.
It’s been compared to the work of genre masters and controversial auteurs like Lucio Fulci, Gaspar Noé, and Abel Ferrara. It has an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 7.2/10. The site’s consensus states: “Bliss may be too narratively and visually intense for less adventurous viewers, but should trigger the titular state for those with a taste for hard-hitting horror.”
