Horror movies have ramped up their marketing efforts in recent years. Weapons is the latest example. The movie created a website, released two hours of security cam footage, along with traditional tactics like an awesome poster and excellent trailer. The end result? It exceeded box office expectations.
Where does Zach Cregger stand among current horror directors? There is a very strong argument that he is the best at mixing horror and humor. Along with being sadistically satisfying, the ending of Weapons is one of the funniest of the year.
The major twist comes well before the final moments. How much people enjoy the twist will also determine how much they like the film as a whole. More so than any other movie in recent memory, the big reveal represents the point of no return for everyone who watches it. For some, Weapons will not be able to do any wrong; for others, it will be a complete turnoff.
Non-linear storytelling is very tricky to pull off. Not only can it disorient the audience, but it can also open the narrative up to plot holes. We discuss one potential issue with Weapons and another minor quibble. We also debate how effectively the film told its story.
Whatever a person’s final opinion on Weapons, there is no denying the amazing performances. There has been a shift in the past few years, but horror tends to get ignored around awards season. It may not end up getting nominated for anything, but it would be surprising if some names from Cregger’s latest release are not at least in the mix when it comes to discussing the year’s best performances. One character will definitely be a major inspiration this Halloween, having quickly catapulted into iconic status.
Whether you love or hate its shocking reveal, Weapons proves that Zach Cregger is one of horror’s most daring voices, cementing his place at the top of the genre’s new wave.

The ‘Evil Dead’ franchise means a lot to us. It has touched us on a personal level, it has earned its place in horror history, and it is one of the few franchises in Hollywood to never release a bad installment. We talk about whether ‘Evil Dead Burn’ continues the trend and why it will probably always be the most polarizing entry in the series.
A few weeks back we talked about how ‘Evil Dead Burn’ had to be trimmed in order to get an ‘R’ rating. We wondered how bad it could have been and even tried to figure out what extreme horror even means today. As it turns out, ‘Evil Dead Burn’ is incredibly graphic. Was it too much or perfect for an ‘Evil Dead’ movie?
There has been lots of talk about how ‘Evil Dead Burn’ does not fit into the franchise. (This seems to be a conversation whenever a new ‘Evil Dead film releases.) There is definitely nothing else like it in the series. We also compare it to another movie that was released this year and wonder which was the better ‘Evil Dead’ movie.
