We dare to face the heartbreak and horror of the dark fairytale “Moon Garden” and the almost unbearably hard-to-watch “Soft & Quiet”.

Moon Garden
There is a LOT of movie news this week!
Beetlejuice is an absolute classic, so the news of a sequel was met with lots of excitement. But the original came out over three decades ago. And Tim Burton has not made a good movie in decades. Plus, sequels made years after the fact do not tend to do well. Are we still excited? We discuss this, along with the surprising Five Nights at Freddy’s trailer and Danzig’s adventures on the French Riviera.
Then it’s on to our featured review.
Moon Garden sounds like one of those movies that kids will love. It boasts fantastic imagery, outrageous characters, and an awesome villain. How did it end up being one of the most difficult films we have ever watched, and why?
In another case of style over substance, we try to figure out the audience for this movie and question the casting.
Plus, we take a look at the recent Netflix film Soft & Quiet.

Soft & Quiet
We have covered some difficult movies on this show. Soft & Quiet may top the list. Both of us were left affected and have a lot to say.
Perhaps surprisingly, both of us had drastically different opinions. We agreed that there were some definite flaws, but one of us would never wish this on anyone, while the other felt this was something worth seeing.
There is no doubt it is a topical movie, but is it an important film of this generation? Would it have made a greater impact if it were released at a different time?
What was the point of Soft & Quiet, and did it take things too far?
All this and more on our latest show.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
Last week, we talked about a sure standout of 2023 and one of the biggest horror films of 2022, Blackberry and Smile.
ABOUT THIS PODCAST:
Every week AIPT Movie Editor Nathaniel Muir and his cinema partner in crime Blake Heath discuss indie and genre movies you have have never heard of, the ones you cannot hear enough about, and the ones you never want to hear about again.
Over the years, we have seen and discussed how horror has become more acceptable in the mainstream. This week we talk about two of the most striking examples of this. One is interesting while the other is just straight up weird. But both have us interested.
The idea of a nun who has lost her faith is not strange for an exorcism movie. Having the first introduction of said nun has her completely nude and coked up after a threesome is a little different. After showing off this incredibly buff nun, the awesomely titled Speed Demon takes off from there.
The film is an example of less being more. It does not reinvent the wheel and tells the simple story of a person trying to overcome their personal demons in order to defeat a literal one. And it works thanks to its setting and quick pace.
But it is in the closing moments that Speed Demon truly shines. In a whirlwind of revelations, the most powerful people in the world become entrenched in Sister Lu’s world. It also sets up the promise of what could be an exciting franchise.
