Sawtober continues on the podcast with the later entries in the increasingly twisty and gnarly Saw franchise, “Saw 5” and “Saw 6”.
We continue our SAWTOBER series with a look at Saw 5 and 6 with Cat Voleur, who gushes for her love with Saw 6 victim William and more!
Robert is joined by the author of REVENGE ARC and co-host of Slasher Radio and This Horror Life, Cat Voleur, to continue his retrospective of the Saw series.
Saw V, released in 2008, was directed by David Hackl in his directorial debut, from a screenplay by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (returning writers from Saw IV).
The increasingly complicated plot follows FBI Agent Strahm investigating the murders committed by the Jigsaw Killer and discovering a much larger and more intricate plot. Like every law enforcement office attempting to get between Jigsaw or his apprentices and their sick idea of rehabilitation, things look grim for Strahm. Meanwhile, fellow detective Mark Hoffman is tasked with leading the investigation into the Jigsaw murders. Except, this series fan favorite is more interested in carrying out John Kramer’s legacy than putting a stop to the carnage.
The film received generally negative reviews from critics but went on to gross $118.2 million worldwide.
Naturally, yet another sequel was immediately greenlit, and Saw VI was released in 2009 with returning writers Melton and Dunstan.
Saw VI was directed by Kevin Greutert (in his directorial debut, after having edited the installments prior to this film). Greutert would later go on to direct the highest-rated film in the franchise, the recently released Saw X.
Similar to its predecessor, Saw VI maintains the focus on the posthumous effects of the Jigsaw Killer and the progression of his successor, Detective Hoffman. The plot follows an insurance executive who must complete a series of deadly “games” set up by Hoffman in order to rescue his employees.
Saw VI was the lowest-grossing film in the franchise at the time, but it was still considered a financial success given its low budget.
