Sawtober spirals towards its conclusion on the podcast with a dissection of the deceptively titled “Final Chapter” and “Jigsaw”.
Kat Hughes returns to the show to help me complete the original saga with The Final Chapter and helps me usher in the beginning of the attempts to reboot the franchise in Jigsaw.
Saw 3D (also released as Saw: The Final Chapter) is a 2010 American 3D horror film directed by Kevin Greutert (Saw X) and written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. It is a sequel to 2009’s Saw VI and the seventh installment in the Saw film series. The film stars Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell, Sean Patrick Flanery, and Cary Elwes.
The plot follows a man who, after falsely claiming to be a survivor of one of the Jigsaw Killer’s games in order to become a local celebrity, finds himself part of a real game where he must save his wife. Meanwhile, John Kramer’s ex-wife Jill Tuck informs Internal Affairs that rogue detective Mark Hoffman is the man responsible for the recent Jigsaw games.
Conceived as the conclusion to the series following diminishing box office returns, it received mostly negative reviews but was a box office success.
Despite Saw 3D being billed as “The Final Chapter”, it was followed by an eighth film, titled Jigsaw, in 2017.
Directed by the Spierig Brothers and written by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, the plot follows a group of people who find themselves forced to participate in a series of deadly “games” inside a barn. Meanwhile, the police investigate a new series of murders that fit the modus operandi of the eponymous Jigsaw Killer, who has been dead for almost a decade.
Jigsaw received negative reviews from critics and grossed a total of $104.2 million worldwide. It was followed by a standalone installment in the series, titled Spiral: From the Book of Saw, in 2021.
