We get a little sexy with part one of our peek at sex in horror, then a little “Cuckoo” with one of the year’s most anticipated new releases.

We do things slightly differently this week as we look at three films instead of our usual double feature.
Our first film is a short that recently made its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival (see our previous Fantasia coverage here). It is also our first entry in our look at sex in genre film.
Dirty Bad Wrong is a look at the past and possible future of how we view sex workers. It is also a tense watch with an uncomfortable climax and a thought-provoking ending.
Before getting hot and heavy, we wanted to dip our toes into sex and horror. We start by entering the modern dating world with another Fantasia film, The Dead Thing. The plot revolves around a woman whose life is consumed by work, dating apps, and shallow hookups. Until she meets a man who wins her over. But when he ghosts her, it leads to a dangerous obsession.
Los Angeles has been the setting for many movies over the decades. We talk about how this film is different and how it adds to the plot. The direction also stylishly combines noir and eroticism. While the story does not reinvent the wheel, it does touch on some powerful themes, and one of us thought it had an all-but-perfect ending.
It is almost a shame how little The Dead Thing does with its characters, however.
Blu Hunt does a fine job in the lead role but is given little to work with. There is little in the way of development, and if you end up caring about her at all, it probably will not be in a positive way. The object of her affection does not give the audience anything to work with. Why is any of this happening? And if I do not know why, how can I care?
We step away from sex and close the show with Cuckoo.

Intentionally choosing style over substance, Director Tillman Singer crafts an atmospheric tale that is creepy while explaining little. A great performance from Euphoria’s Hunter Shafer, paired with Dan Stevens in an over-the-top role, is the film’s biggest attraction. But are they enough to make up for a plot that has plenty of questions but no answers?
Cuckoo is in theaters now.
Every week AIPT Movie Editor Nathaniel Muir and his cinema partner in crime Blake Heath discuss indie and genre movies you have have never heard of, the ones you cannot hear enough about, and the ones you never want to hear about again.
We have spent years talking about how important The Blair Witch Project is. We discuss the pros and cons of the latest reimagining of the iconic found footage classic. And we are definitely interested. Plus, the latest internet horror fad that Hollywood wants to adapt into a movie. And while it does seem a little silly to us, they do have a strong director attached to it.
The Asylum has been putting out grade-A quality B movies for a long time. Sharknado may be their most well-known, but their specialty are mockbusters like Tomb Invader and Top Gunner. We could not wait to take a look at their inner workings.
Mockbuster does much more than that. Sure, there is plenty of footage from The Asylum library. And yes, all of it is amazing. The interviews with the people at the top of the company are also great. They know the score and are funny, entertaining, and informative.
But it is the documentary’s subject that is the beating heart of the film. Anthony Frith is one of the most charming people we have ever seen and we enjoyed watching his journey. Mockbuster ended up being an unexpected feel-good watch thanks to Frith and all of the incredibly supportive people featured.
On top of all that, we get to see how a movie from The Asylum gets made!
