“Midnight Vintage” is perfect to curl up with at night—a treasure trove of 20 haunting short stories, full of unexpected twists and turns.
When I first received a copy of Midnight Vintage, it grabbed my attention before I opened it. Besides the extraordinary artwork by Skinner that’s almost impossible not to be captivated by, the cover bears a quote from Slash from Guns N’ Roses: “A very eclectically creepy and hauntingly scary collection of, dare I say, brilliant short stories.”
That devotion to jaw-dropping packaging combined with such a potent recommendation was certainly enough to convince me to give it a read. However, in case that’s not quite enough for you, please allow me to share my honest thoughts and why this earns my highest five-star rating.
Midnight Vintage is a collection of stories delving into the most obscure recesses of the human psyche, a haunting realm vividly depicted by Sean Eads and Joshua Viola.
The authors intricately crafted a captivating tapestry of folk horror, fantasy, and science fiction, each delving into humanity’s darkest inclinations. Eads and Viola skillfully intermingle and fuse genres, incorporating elements from various subgenres like supernatural horror and slasher fiction.
Unflinching in their portrayal of violence and gore, they delve deep into the characters, fearlessly scrutinizing the profound depths of their tormented souls.
The book begins with “The Making,” which offers a chilling twist on paranormal investigations that unfold with unexpected twists and turns that culminate in a shocking twist.
In addition, here are a few of my personal highlights from this consistently strong anthology.
“The Devil’s Reel” is a unique twist on Christian-themed supernatural horror, centering around a movie theater in a small midwestern town. “The Devourer” presents a distinctive supernatural element, blending elements of the supernatural and science fiction while delving into conspiracy theories. “The Climb Up To Hell” revolves around a group of adolescents entangled in a prank gone awry.
This diverse anthology is easy to devour, offering twenty chilling and equally captivating stories that delve into the obscure corners of our reality, where our most terrifying nightmares reside.
