Our latest mini podcast review is the thought-provoking and entertaining cosmic horror film “The Empty Space” now available on VOD.
To celebrate and support new release horror films, the Not Your Final Girl hosts periodically release a special bonus minisode to share our thoughts on a buzzed-about new horror film. Typically, we do this for films we head to the theater to see. But this time, we’ve got a New Release Wall INDIE EDITION! There’s no need to go to a theater to check this one out, ghouls. You can rent it on VOD or Amazon now.
Candace and Ariel give a spoiler-free mini-review of filmmaker Andrew Jara’s new film, THE EMPTY SPACE (2023). Cosmic horror meets humor and slice of life, all while thoughtfully tackling the theme of grief. Be sure to check out the movie here and support indie horror cinema.
The Empty Space follows a woman, Aimee Andrews (Valerie Alene), as she deals with grief and anxiety after a violent attack. The film was written and directed by Andrew Jara, a Latino filmmaker from El Paso, Texas. The Empty Space is his fourth feature film; his previous features include Borderland (2016), The Last Ones (2012), and Last Days (2010). Jara’s features and shorts have played festivals all over the world as well as on multiple streaming services.
His latest feature, The Empty Space, a cosmic horror about mental illness, won the “Best of the Fest” award at the Sacramento Horror Film Festival.
Andrew hopes to continue making genre films that reach people beyond entertainment value and brings a Latino perspective to a broad audience.

Ariel Dyer and Candace Sluder are not (your) final girls. Join us for biweekly & very charming chats about horror movies!
Ever wonder what it is about Christmas horror and unwanted pregnancy? Don’t worry, we’ve got this and several other dubious holiday needs covered. This episode, Candace and Ariel are talking about infamous and oddly goofy New French Extreme home invasion nightmare Inside (2007), as well as a different sort of home invasion (bad roommates) in indie horror comedy The Leech (2022).
This will be our last episode for 2023, and as always we’re so thrilled to have you with us, listeners. Whatever your plans for this final stretch of the year, we hope you can take us with you and check out these nasty little Christmas movies. Please heed our warning and do not watch the 2016 remake of Inside — unless you’re into that sort of thing. We’ll be back in 2024 with more soul-crushing content.
A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Our drive for intersectionality aligns well with the Morbidly Beautiful ethos. We love that MB is a nonprofit that gives back to the horror community, and are thrilled to be a part of the network! Show now also streaming on morbidlybeautiful.com!
