This gruesome sfx makeup look is sure to win you points if you’re dressing up as an Alien or Zombie!

This gag-worthy look is sure to win points if you’re dressing up as an Alien or Zombie for an event, or just trying to get the day off. A twist on trypophobia (a fear of holes), this infected look is fairly easy to make and is totally gross!

Firstly, you’ll need to gather your equipment. For this sfx makeup look you will need:

  • SFX Nose and Scar Wax (I’ve used Ben Nye, but there are so many available online, you can even make your own)
  • A bruise wheel, or yellow, purple, red, green and blue matte eyeshadows
  • Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly
  • Homemade pus mixture (powdered sugar, yellow and green food colouring and water)
  • Makeup brushes
  • Baby or Face powder
  • Disposable sponges
  • Fake blood

Step 1:

You’ll want to make your pus mixture first; I mixed two heaped teaspoons of powdered sugar with a small amount of water in a glass. You want the mixture to be thick but slightly runny. I then added yellow food coloring and a small amount of green. Play with the colors a bit until you get something you like. Mine turned out a bit like the vomit from The Exorcist!

Step 2:

Take a scoop of Nose and Scar Wax and decide where you want your infection. Once you’ve decided where, smooth the wax out with your finger tips and use the Vaseline to blend out the edges into the skin. Use baby or face powder over the area to remove any shine.

Step 3:

Taking a makeup brush, dip the rounded end into the Vaseline and start making some holes by twisting the brush and lifting! You can make as many as you want and use a variety of sizes with different brushes.

Step 4:

Use your bruise wheel or eyeshadows to create the infection colors. I layered yellow and then green, adding the purple and red around the holes and spreading into the skin with my fingertips.

Step 5:

Now the fun part! Use a makeup brush to fill the holes with the pus you made earlier. You can add some fake blood to the holes to make the area look even more irritated. You can dip your finger into the pus mixture and dab it around the area, which will dry and create a crusty appearance.

The great thing about this look is that you can do it anywhere on your body, be it your face, hand or chest! It’s totally gross and easy to make. You can change the colors up and get as creative as you want with it.

Until next time, stay scary!
