SPOILER ALERT! AS WITH ALL SPECIAL EDITIONS, WE TALK ABOUT SPECIFIC PLOT DETAILS.
The first Scream is one of the most important films in horror history. It invented meta storytelling, Ghostface became an iconic character, and it delivered a number of memorable moments. In the quarter century since, there have been five sequels with very little change to the formula that made it initially successful.
So far, it has worked, with each installment delivering a good time. Scream VI continues some of the trademarks of the franchise. Were they able to pull it off, or is it starting to get stale? How well would the movie get along without Neve Campbell? Would they be able to pull off another great opening?
Taking a horror favorite out of a small setting and taking it to Manhattan has not fared so well in the past. How did Ghostface react to being in a much bigger city? Did the plot do a good job of incorporating the Big Apple, or did it get too cute for its own good? Will the franchise be hitting the road again?
You cannot have a spoiler-filled episode without talking about the ending. Surprisingly, one of us predicted one of the biggest moments of Scream VI. Not as surprising is one of us completely whiffed. Was the twist really that clever, or did one of the best-delivered lines of the franchise throw us off the scent?
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
Last week, we celebrated the Oscars by looking at the Best Picture-nominated film Triangle of Sadness. We try to make sense of it and discuss whether it deserves such esteemed recognition. We also discussed the erratic Irish folk horror Unwelcome.
ABOUT THIS PODCAST:
Every week AIPT Movie Editor Nathaniel Muir and his cinema partner in crime Blake Heath discuss indie and genre movies you have have never heard of, the ones you cannot hear enough about, and the ones you never want to hear about again.
Over the years, we have seen and discussed how horror has become more acceptable in the mainstream. This week we talk about two of the most striking examples of this. One is interesting while the other is just straight up weird. But both have us interested.
The idea of a nun who has lost her faith is not strange for an exorcism movie. Having the first introduction of said nun has her completely nude and coked up after a threesome is a little different. After showing off this incredibly buff nun, the awesomely titled Speed Demon takes off from there.
The film is an example of less being more. It does not reinvent the wheel and tells the simple story of a person trying to overcome their personal demons in order to defeat a literal one. And it works thanks to its setting and quick pace.
But it is in the closing moments that Speed Demon truly shines. In a whirlwind of revelations, the most powerful people in the world become entrenched in Sister Lu’s world. It also sets up the promise of what could be an exciting franchise.
