It’s a surreal sci-fi double feature with two new releases, indie horror “Capsules” and the absurdist comedy “Smoking Causes Coughing”.
Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the biggest movie stars of all time. His new movie comes out this October. We talk about his penchant for working with the same directors and his history with horror movies. Plus, we discuss the scientifically proven scariest movie of all time.
Capsules is a film with some cool ideas. It does a good job of building tension and has an interesting premise. But the script ignores the characters, continuity, and its own logic. What good it does is usually in scenes that do not make sense. Most of all, it is filled with privilege.
Smoking Causes Coughing is the most absurd superhero movie ever released. It includes heroes named after cancer-causing chemicals, a talking barracuda, and lots of blood. It does not make any sense on paper, but it is one of the most interesting films to come out this year.
We also talk about a modern kung fu movie, a quick remake, one of the biggest releases of the year, and a new release from Shudder.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
Last week, we talked about one of the most unique movies to screen at this year’s SXSW film festival, Only the Good Survive. We talk about the good, the bad, and the weird.
ABOUT THIS PODCAST:
Every week AIPT Movie Editor Nathaniel Muir and his cinema partner in crime Blake Heath discuss indie and genre movies you have have never heard of, the ones you cannot hear enough about, and the ones you never want to hear about again.
Over the years, we have seen and discussed how horror has become more acceptable in the mainstream. This week we talk about two of the most striking examples of this. One is interesting while the other is just straight up weird. But both have us interested.
The idea of a nun who has lost her faith is not strange for an exorcism movie. Having the first introduction of said nun has her completely nude and coked up after a threesome is a little different. After showing off this incredibly buff nun, the awesomely titled Speed Demon takes off from there.
The film is an example of less being more. It does not reinvent the wheel and tells the simple story of a person trying to overcome their personal demons in order to defeat a literal one. And it works thanks to its setting and quick pace.
But it is in the closing moments that Speed Demon truly shines. In a whirlwind of revelations, the most powerful people in the world become entrenched in Sister Lu’s world. It also sets up the promise of what could be an exciting franchise.
