Join us for a podcast minisode where your co-hosts discuss the latest genre films to invade theaters, “Evil Dead Rise” and “Beau is Afraid”.
Candace and Ariel decided to celebrate Mother’s Day by dividing and conquering at the theater to bring you a very special episode.
Ariel watched the latest in an iconic horror franchise EVIL DEAD RISE, and Candace checked out the much-anticipated new Ari Aster flick BEAU IS AFRAID. In an unhinged move, we bring you an entirely different format in which we give spoiler-free reviews to each other of these two movies and SOMEHOW still come up with why they might make for an excellent double feature (hint: it’s bad mommies and mommy issues).
Beau Is Afraid is a 2023 American surrealist tragicomedy horror film written, directed, and produced by Ari Aster. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as the title character along with Beau Wassermann. It also includes a supporting ensemble cast of Patti LuPone, Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Kylie Rogers, Parker Posey, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Michael Gandolfini, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Richard Kind.
Distributed by A24, Beau Is Afraid follows the mild-mannered but paranoia-ridden Beau as he embarks on a surreal odyssey to get home to attend his mother’s funeral, confronting his greatest fears along the way.
Evil Dead Rise is a 2023 American supernatural horror film written and directed by Lee Cronin. It is the fifth installment of the Evil Dead film series. The film stars Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland as two estranged sisters trying to survive and save their family from deadites. Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Nell Fisher (in her film debut) appear in supporting roles.
The film was originally set to premiere on the streaming service HBO Max, but distributor Warner Bros. Pictures opted to release the film theatrically after positive test screenings. It premiered at SXSW and was released in the United States on April 21st, becoming the highest-grossing film in the series.

Ariel Dyer and Candace Sluder are not (your) final girls. Join us for biweekly & very charming chats about horror movies!
Ever wonder what it is about Christmas horror and unwanted pregnancy? Don’t worry, we’ve got this and several other dubious holiday needs covered. This episode, Candace and Ariel are talking about infamous and oddly goofy New French Extreme home invasion nightmare Inside (2007), as well as a different sort of home invasion (bad roommates) in indie horror comedy The Leech (2022).
This will be our last episode for 2023, and as always we’re so thrilled to have you with us, listeners. Whatever your plans for this final stretch of the year, we hope you can take us with you and check out these nasty little Christmas movies. Please heed our warning and do not watch the 2016 remake of Inside — unless you’re into that sort of thing. We’ll be back in 2024 with more soul-crushing content.
