We dive into a few 2025 horror gems and oddities streaming now—from microbudget horror comedy mayhem to pet-led heartbreak and WTF twists.
Catch up with recent episodes of the podcast, where we get weird with four very different 2025 fright flicks. First up, we tackle the promise vs. reality of The Weedhacker Massacre and the beautifully off-kilter character work of Other — a low-budget double feature where jokes misfire, gore is scarce, and one unforgettable lead performance does the heavy lifting. Then we jump to Ash, a slick, moody sci-fi chiller that looks incredible right up until its bonkers Alien-biting finale, and Good Boy, a haunted house heartbreaker told almost entirely through the eyes of a dog.
From mixed-bag slashers to emotionally devastating pet horror, these episodes dig into what works, what face-plants, and which titles are actually worth queuing up on Tubi, Shudder, or VOD.
The Weedhacker Massacre (2025)/Other (2025)
Low-budget horror is supposed to be gross and fun. Especially when you have a title like The Weedhacker Massacre. Anything besides the laughs and gore is a bonus.
Unfortunately, The Weedhacker Massacre‘s attempts at humor rarely work. And it has little in the way of gore. This means it has to focus on story and acting.
It goes about as well as expected.
Other is saved by its amazing lead performance. This includes a main character who gives you plenty of reasons to get behind her, but does everything to push you away. It is one of the strangest written characters we have ever seen.
The film is also strange. It is tense and scary, but not noticeably so. It has an interesting premise, but nothing stands out.
A poorly done twist and a hilarious reveal certainly don’t help the outing.
Ash (2025)/Good Boy (2025)
After watching the trailer for Ash, it is hard not to wonder if they used all the good shots for it. After seeing the actual movie, you realized that they could have picked any part of the film and it would have looked great. It also features some top-notch performances and an engaging mystery.
So why do so many people hate it? It probably has to do with the climax, which ruins all the goodwill Ash had built up.
The over-the-top nature is subjective, and some people will enjoy it. But its decision to completely rip off Alien is hard to ignore.
Good Boy does not hide the fact that it is a gimmick. It is a haunted house story in which the main character is a dog. But not only is Indy the main character, he is pretty much the only one. The story and camera are completely different, focused on him.
Does it move past this and become something that audiences can become attached to? Well, if you have ever had a pet, you will love Good Boy. And if you have not had one, it will make you want to get one.
Oh yeah. It is also scary, has great storytelling, and features one of the most emotionally impactful movies we have seen all year.
Every week AIPT Movie Editor Nathaniel Muir and his cinema partner in crime Blake Heath discuss indie and genre movies you have have never heard of, the ones you cannot hear enough about, and the ones you never want to hear about again.
We have spent years talking about how important The Blair Witch Project is. We discuss the pros and cons of the latest reimagining of the iconic found footage classic. And we are definitely interested. Plus, the latest internet horror fad that Hollywood wants to adapt into a movie. And while it does seem a little silly to us, they do have a strong director attached to it.
The Asylum has been putting out grade-A quality B movies for a long time. Sharknado may be their most well-known, but their specialty are mockbusters like Tomb Invader and Top Gunner. We could not wait to take a look at their inner workings.
Mockbuster does much more than that. Sure, there is plenty of footage from The Asylum library. And yes, all of it is amazing. The interviews with the people at the top of the company are also great. They know the score and are funny, entertaining, and informative.
But it is the documentary’s subject that is the beating heart of the film. Anthony Frith is one of the most charming people we have ever seen and we enjoyed watching his journey. Mockbuster ended up being an unexpected feel-good watch thanks to Frith and all of the incredibly supportive people featured.
On top of all that, we get to see how a movie from The Asylum gets made!
