It’s another horror triple feature as we discuss the hugely influential “Blair Witch” found footage series with guest Angel Krause.

Blair Witch Project

Join your host and special guest, Angel Krause, as we journey into the woods in search of the legendary Blair Witch! We explore all three movies in the franchise as well as the phenomenon surrounding it.

The Blair Witch Project is a 1999 American supernatural horror film written, directed, and edited by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez. It is a fictional story of three student filmmakers — Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard — who hike into the Black Hills near Burkittsville, Maryland, in 1994 to film a documentary about a local myth known as the Blair Witch. The three disappear, but their equipment and footage are discovered a year later. The purportedly “found footage” is the movie the viewer sees.

The film grossed nearly $250 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful independent films of all time, as well as the 41st most profitable horror film, while also being a sleeper hit. It launched a media franchise, which includes two sequels (Book of Shadows and Blair Witch), novels, comic books, and video games.

Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 is a 2000 American horror film directed and co-written by Joe Berlinger. Its plot revolves around a group of people fascinated by the mythology surrounding the film The Blair Witch Project; they go into the Black Hills, where the original film was shot, and experience supernatural phenomena and psychological unraveling. It was met with critical disdain and, according to Berlinger, was altered significantly in post-production from the filmmaker’s original vision.

In 2016, indie horror darling Adam Wingard directed Blair Witch, the third film in the franchise, written by Simon Barrett. It was conceptualized as a direct sequel to the original 1999 film while ignoring the events of its 2000 follow-up. The film follows a group of college students and their local guides who venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the prior disappearance of Heather Donahue, the sister of one of the characters.
