The only thing scarier than a ghost ship carrying a crew of dead men is a ship that isn’t supposed to exist — the infamous S.S. Ourang Medan.

S.S. Ourang Medan

Ghost ships are fun stories. They’re often great stories. But what happens when the story may or may not be real? Well, we get the mystery of the Ourang Medan.

The SS Ourang Medan is a supposed ghost ship that allegedly became a shipwreck in the Dutch East Indies in the late 1940s. The ship’s entire crew died under suspicious circumstances sometime in the 1940s (exact date unknown). Nearby ships reported receiving a horrifying distress call. Then, there was an unintelligible frenzy of Morse code. The radio operator had the final unnerving word: “I die.”

When the ship was found, the cursed crew were all dead onboard, in a ghastly state. That alone would have been enough to fuel fascination with this nightmarish nautical tale. But even more twisted than the mystery of what happened on board the doomed vessel is why there seems to be no official record of the ship anywhere to be found.

It’s a haunting urban legend that inspired the game The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan. Tune in to get all the eerie details.
