As part of our Summer Disaster Series, we briefly chat about some of our favorite disaster films from the 70s to the present day.
The Spookshow Summer Disaster continues with our latest Spookshow Spotlight, and we talk about our favorite disaster movies that we’re not discussing during the Summer Disaster series!
When it comes to the term disaster movies, we are using a broad definition to expand our cinematic universe. For the purpose of our Summer Disaster Series, “disaster” is anything that, if it happened in real life, would be considered disastrous. That means we’re talking about more than the big-budget spectacles showcasing natural disasters like mega earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes. It’s more than just terrorist attacks and alien invasions. It’s even more than global catastrophes like a pandemic.
In this short bonus episode, we share some disaster movies we consider essential viewing, highlighting a wide range of different types of disasters. These are films we aren’t covering on the podcast or over on our YouTube channel. We’ll be briefly chatting about everything from horror classics like The Birds to monumental monster movies to some of our favorites from the 70s, the golden age of disaster films. We even cover an extremely popular disaster series from the 60s and 70s that found renewed success with a modern reboot. It’s all here — from natural disasters to post-apocalyptic horror films to emergency movies.
We talk about what makes these kinds of films so appealing as popcorn movies. We chat a bit about the difference between the disaster movie craze of the 70s vs the 90s, movies that are wildly fun without being actually good, and even some of the worst disaster films we’ve had the misfortune to watch.
