The “Terrifier” franchise has become a juggernaut thanks to the wild success of “Terrifier 2” and a truly iconic villain, Art the Clown.

Brutal. That’s the word of the week since we’re finally getting around to “Terrifier 2” (2022). We thought it would be good to get caught up for October’s release of “Terrifier 3”!

FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF:

Terrifier 2 delivered a fresh, gut-wrenching shock to the horror landscape when it premiered in 2022. As a brutal horror experience, it pushed the boundaries of what many expect from slasher films, earning praise for its relentless intensity.

Critics and fans alike noted that its creativity, paired with graphic violence, makes it one of the most terrifying films of its genre in recent memory. Where most horror films tread lightly, Terrifier 2 embraces grotesque imagery and extended, nightmarish sequences, creating a uniquely horrifying spectacle that lingers with the audience long after the credits roll.

The film is praised for its balance between gruesome practical effects and a sense of unhinged unpredictability. Director Damien Leone effectively creates a claustrophobic atmosphere where no one is safe, a staple in slashers, but takes it further by not shying away from showing in agonizing detail the violence that horror fans often crave.

It’s a movie made with gore-hounds in mind, pulling inspiration from exploitation films but giving it a modern update.

The success of Terrifier 2 was as surprising as its contents were shocking.

Originally released in theaters on a limited basis, the film experienced an unexpected surge in popularity, eventually grossing over $15 million worldwide—an astonishing figure for a movie made on a shoestring budget of around $250,000. The grassroots, word-of-mouth marketing strategy contributed to this, as fans, particularly hardcore horror enthusiasts, rallied around the movie.

Art the Clown, portrayed chillingly by David Howard Thornton, has now solidified his place as one of the most iconic killer clowns in horror cinema, standing alongside figures like Pennywise from It and Captain Spaulding from House of 1000 Corpses.

At its Fantastic Fest premiere, Terrifier 3 garnered much anticipation and hype. Early reviews suggested that it continues the franchise’s tradition of blending shocking violence with surreal, supernatural storytelling.

The third film in the trilogy looks set to carry the franchise into even darker and more twisted territory while still delivering the creativity, brutality, and intensity that have become synonymous with the series.

You can watch Terrifier 2 on Prime Video or Freevee.
