Beyond a genre classic, “Dracula” (1931) is a cultural touchstone that shaped the genre and continues to captivate audiences decades later.

Dracula

This week it’s Donny’s pick, and he went with a genuine horror classic, “Dracula” (1931)! This had to be a part of the Sucky Summer, our tribute to vampire horror.

FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF:

Dracula is a 1931 American pre-code supernatural horror film directed and co-produced by Tod Browning from a screenplay written by Garrett Fort, based on the 1924 stage play by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston, which in turn is adapted from the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker.

Horror legend Bela Lugosi portrays Count Dracula, a vampire who emigrates from Transylvania to England and preys upon the blood of living victims, including a young man’s fiancée. Lugosi’s performance as Dracula is considered definitive. His sinister charm, imposing presence, and distinctive accent created an enduring image of the vampire that has influenced countless subsequent portrayals.

This film was a groundbreaking achievement in the horror genre. It successfully translated a classic gothic novel into a visually striking and suspenseful cinematic experience, helping establish the horror film as a viable genre in Hollywood.

Many horror film tropes and conventions, including dark castles, mysterious characters, and the battle between good and evil, were established or popularized by Dracula.

Produced and distributed by Universal Pictures, Dracula is the first sound film adaptation of the Stoker novel. Several actors were considered to portray the title character, but Lugosi, who had previously played the role on Broadway, eventually got the part. The film was a commercial and critical success upon release, leading to several sequels and spin-offs. It has had a notable influence on popular culture.

The film is currently available to rent on most VOD platforms.
