The Banshees of Inisherin

EPISODE SUMMARY
With the Academy Awards coming up, we decided to do something a little different. When awards season rolls around, we usually talk about the stuff we wanted to see nominated. This week, we review one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2022 and a recipient of nine Oscar nods. Plus, we discuss an indie film about paranormal investigators and possessions.

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

The Super Bowl is coming up, and you will be surprised by our predictions for the big game. We also discuss the upcoming merger between Paramount+ and Showtime and the new and somber Fast X poster. Believe it or not, we are anticipating the majority of these things. So who is the odd duck?

Then it’s on to our featured reviews.

Don’t Look at the Demon is an awful name for a movie. It is not as bad as changing Eight for Silver to The Cursed, but few titles are as generic. (We are looking at you, A Killing in Virginia, and other lazy names.)

This film also made strange casting decisions and completely ignored its setting. However, it does boast strong performances, effective jump scares, and a demon that does not mess around. It even has a shower scene for old-school horror fans!

The story is as cookie-cutter as can be, and the ending is laughably bad. But is there enough here for a person to enjoy?

Next, we step out of our wheelhouse and look at one of this year’s Oscar nominees.

The Banshees of Inisherin is funny, sad, poignant, and incredibly dark. There is no arguing about the strength of the acting either. But did the story take things too far?

Is it truly worthy of an Academy Award? Or is it lucky to be sniffing the rarified air of movies like Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar 2? Tune in to find out!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

Sundance officially kicked off the highly anticipated festival season and introduced fans to the genre films we’ll all be talking about in 2023. We discuss a couple of highlights.
