The Wickedly Talented Ladies of Macabre Merch: Six Questions for the Beauty and Brains Behind the Killer Shop, Villainous Wax

I’m such a wax melt junkie, and Villainous Wax, owned by fellow Texas Holli Harrison, is hands down one of my absolute favorites. You won’t find a larger or more indulgent selection of scents anywhere else. And all the hand poured melts are inspired by villains in your favorite movies, popular fandoms, Disney, and all things spooky. Each melt is a creative combination of scents, designed to reflect the film character its inspired by. In addition to smelling heavenly, they are also truly works of art.

1. What was the inspiration for starting your own business and how did you get started?

Well, I was inspired to start Villainous Wax on a trip to Disney World because I love all things villain related and indie wax melts. I was getting a business degree at the time, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to put my business skills to use too. I had already experimented with making wax but didn’t know in what direction to go with for my company and brand. I’ve always been a dark side kind of gal; Slytherin, horror movie buff, etc. I love that I can bring these attributes to my business as well!

2. When and how did you fall in love with horror?

I’m gonna let you in on a little secret, I am a total baby when it comes to horror movies, but I still love them!! The Goosebumps show used to freak me out as a child, yet I still watched them every chance I could get. The classic horror/thriller movies (particularly The Shining) have a special place in my heart because I bonded over them with my dad. He passed away about 3 months before I opened Villainous Wax, and I knew I would have to bring horror and spooky themes into my business in honor of him.

3. Where does inspiration for your products come from? What is your creative process like?

I get inspiration for my products from fandoms and their main characters/scenes. Usually, I re-watch the shows or movies and do a ton of research for characteristics of specific characters that I want to represent in collections, then I think about what I feel like they would smell like. For example, my scent inspired by Jack Torrance from The Shinning: fresh snow, lemon sugar cookies, and a shot of whiskey. The surroundings of the Overlook Hotel, something I am assuming Wendy Torrance would be baking in the kitchen for Danny, and the drink Lloyd serves to Jack in the ballroom bar.

I put so much thought and effort into every scent I create because I want to bring the character to life. I want my customers’ favorite characters and stories be brought to life.

4. What’s the best part about running your own business, and what’s the hardest part?

The best part about running my own business is that I get to make my schedule, and I determine what I do for the day. I don’t sleep in late or lounge around all day or anything like that. I get up at 6 AM with my partner, who gets ready for her job, I write my To Do list for the day, and then work until 5 PM or later. The hardest part is definitely the amount of anxiety and worry I have about whether or not my customers are going to love their orders and think I nailed the character scents!

5. Tell me why you think it’s important for people to support small business? Is it especially important for people to support female-owned business (if so, why)?

Oh gosh, it’s so important to support small businesses!!! That’s what our country is built on! But you should also specifically support small businesses run by women, POC, and LGBT+. That is a significant portion of the world population and has a positive economic impact. It also doesn’t hurt that you are supporting an actual personal with a family and life, not just a huge CEO’s continuously growing salary.

6. How can people follow/interact with you on social and purchase your products? And is there anything else you’d like to add or promote?
