A genre game-changer and often considered one of the best “Dracula” adaptations, “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” was a monumental achievement.
We continue the Sucky Summer with Will’s choice, one of the best horror movies of the 90s, “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992)!
FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF:
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is a 1992 American vampire horror film based on the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker. It was produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola and written by James V. Hart.
Set in 19th-century England and Romania, it follows the titular vampire (Gary Oldman), who falls in love with Mina Murray (Winona Ryder), the fiancée of his solicitor Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves). When Dracula begins terrorizing Mina’s friends, Professor Abraham Van Helsing (Antony Hopkins), an expert in vampirism, is summoned to end his reign of terror.
The film considerably affected popular culture and vampire representation in media. It was a landmark in vampire horror and the only Dracula adaptation to win Oscars. Many critics see it as a game changer, establishing a tone and style that redefined cinematic vampires. It created a host of new vampire film tropes, like retractable fangs, vampires turning into literal bat-men, and a steampunk aesthetic.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is often considered significant in the way that The Exorcist and The Shining were significant—it shows that a horror story can be worthy of an A-list cast and production values. Forbes ranked it as the best vampire film ever in its “Top 10 Best Vampire Movies Of All Time” list. Oldman’s Dracula is often considered one of the best of all time.
