As winter wanes, let’s explore a few cinematic encounters with the Abominable Snowman, from classic chills to modern B-movie gore-fests.

Winter’s icy grip on us is finally starting to thaw as we spring forward and welcome the sunnier days ahead. But we had a blast talking about the wintery world of Polar Predators over the past two months. In case you missed us talking about any of these killer chillers, now is a great time to catch up. Wrap yourself in a cozy blanket, make a cup of hot cocoa, and let us warm your horror heart with a look at some of the coolest and most abominable creatures of Winter Horror.

ABOMINABLE (2020)

This modern horror entry dives headfirst into gory creature-feature territory. A scientific expedition in the Himalayas, seeking rare medicinal plants, quickly becomes a Yeti’s prey. If you crave intense, violent encounters with the legendary beast, this film delivers a contemporary, albeit low-budget, thrill. It’s a solid choice for fans of modern monster movies.

THE SECRET OF THE ICE CAVE (1989)

A late 80s B-movie gem, The Secret of the Ice Cave sends explorers into a frozen labyrinth where they encounter a mysterious creature. This film, our Cult Classic Spotlight for the month, embodies the campy charm of its era, with low-budget effects and a delightfully cheesy atmosphere. It’s perfect for those who appreciate the nostalgic appeal of vintage creature features.

NIGHT OF THE HOWLING BEAST (1975)

This Spanish cult classic is a wild fusion of martial arts and Yeti horror. A martial arts expert battles the legendary beast, resulting in a truly unique and often hilarious cinematic experience. Known for its low-budget effects and eccentric plot, this film has garnered a devoted following among fans of obscure horror. It’s a must-see for those seeking something truly bizarre.

SNOW MONSTER (2019)

This is a very low-budget modern creature feature. With the rapid development of science and technology in the future (year 2045), a Gene Research Company sent Shen Yiqin and others into the mysterious snowy area on the edge of the Arctic, where they come under attack by unknown giant creatures. Also known as SNOW MONSTER VS ICE SHARK, this was made for the Chinese streaming platform Youku. It ends up being weird—really weird—but also weirdly fun, especially for kaiju fans. You can watch the whole thing for free here on YouTube.

ABOMINABLE (2006)

Abominable (2006) offers a more straightforward horror experience, focusing on a man recovering from an accident who witnesses a Yeti terrorizing his secluded cabin. With some recognizable actors from the horror genre, this film delivers suspenseful creature attacks and a chilling atmosphere. It’s a solid choice, influenced by a classic, Rear Window. It’s definitely still a B-movie, but it’s pretty well-executed with solid gore and enjoyable creature effects.

THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN (1957)

A classic of British horror, The Abominable Snowman (1957) explores the Yeti’s mystery through an atmospheric expedition to the Himalayas. This film stands out for its suspenseful pacing and philosophical undertones, delving into the nature of the legendary creature. It’s a must-watch for fans of classic horror and those who appreciate a more thoughtful approach to the Yeti myth.
