“Legacy of the Beast” was more than a game — it was a global community for Iron Maiden super fans. It’s the end of an era… but what’s next?
Iron Maiden’s Legacy of the Beast game shut down after eight years in December 2024. The game allowed players to control different versions of the band’s iconic mascot, with fans allowed to battle each other and build a winning team through their unique abilities.
At the time of its shutdown, the developers cited over six million players as part of its legacy. The game ran for eight years (from its 2016 release to the end of 2024), which is a long run for a licensed mobile title. Its endurance suggests solid retention for a sizable core fan base, even if it never became a “blockbuster” in mobile game terms.
Many praised its nods to Iron Maiden lore, use of artwork, and integration of the band’s music.
Unusually for a mobile game, Legacy of the Beast became more than just a game: it inspired a full tour by Iron Maiden. In 2018, the band launched the Legacy of the Beast World Tour, featuring stage designs and concepts tied to the game.
The Game was a Huge Hit with Fans
Iron Maiden is a globally recognized band with a passionate and devoted fan base. Any game tied to their brand starts with a strong head start in terms of audience interest. The thematic and aesthetic integration is deep: the game draws heavily on Maiden’s art, albums, mythology, and Eddie (their mascot).
One of the standout features was that you could play with other players from across the world. You could adopt a strategy and pivot accordingly, depending on the game’s flow. There were also a number of tournaments held to increase engagement and add new challenges for seasoned players.
This approach to game creation is also evident in other sectors. For example, the best online poker rooms frequently add new tournaments and challenges to try to keep players engaged. Lobbies offer the chance to connect with players from across the world, which helps to provide a continuous stream of new opportunities. Seasoned players can push themselves to the limits, and at the same time, new players have the chance to have fun without going up against veterans all the time.
Legacy of the Beast (LOTB) enabled players to customize their character’s skin and overall aesthetic, making the game feel more personal and unique.
As you played and became more experienced, you unlocked rewards and new aesthetics, which always gave fans something to come back and play for.
This level of individuality is popular among many games, even online chess. Many online chess platforms allow you to upgrade or earn points towards changing the color of your board, pieces, or virtual environment. You could even score the collectible character Eddie, tapping into completionist motivations and fan desire to gather different incarnations of their mascot.
Ultimately, LOTB lowered the barrier to entry by making it a free-to-play mobile RPG. It took a number of successful game features and rolled them all into one huge game that was a real hit with fans. With strong visual design, drawing from Iron Maiden’s iconic album art and themes, and (of course) killer music, the game delivered thematic depth along with serious fan service.
Although it’s now the end of an era, LOTB had a strong run, bringing impressive creativity to its design and cross-promotional strategies.
Why Did the Game Shut Down?
The Legacy of the Beast game, launched in 2016, forged a strong connection with fans. The ability to sustain an active player base over eight years and accumulate millions of players is no small feat for a licensed game in the mobile space.
With that said, the band has announced that they are shutting down the game so that they can focus on their future ventures. The band has been on many tours during their time, with members currently gearing up for one of the most exciting tours yet.
The Run for Your Lives tour kicked off in June, with the band performing an extensive setlist of songs spanning their first nine albums. The tour allows Iron Maiden to revisit songs that have not been played in a very long time—a celebration of the band’s longevity and formative years.
The band has accomplished a great deal in its time, with many of its members pursuing their own projects. Steve Harris, for example, has his project with British Lion, and Adrian Smith has a project called Smith/Kotzen. Bruce Dickinson also spends his time as a pilot, navigating the skies and occasionally flying the band to big festival shows. With the band being so busy as of late, and with their latest release of the album Senjutsu, it’s clear that things are moving at a rapid pace.
The decision to close the game was purely to free up resources for the band. As it was such a success, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a revival in the future.
