Houston Horror Film Festival

The inaugural Houston Horror Film Festival, founded by indie horror filmmaker Troy Escamilla, will take place on June 7-9, 2019 at the Hilton Garden Inn Houston/West Katy in Katy, Texas. Escamilla is a horror fanatic who wanted to “to recognize and showcase true independent horror.”

Indie horror filmmakers should look to the Houston Horror Film Festival as a sincere avenue to show their films to the right audience.

According to the festival’s website, the mission of the Houston Horror Film Festival is to “bring the best in independent horror to the Bayou City and cultivate an objective festival that truly focuses on the films selected and filmmakers who attend.” The festival “seeks horror films by filmmakers who embrace and have a passion for the genre that is apparent in their films, despite budget constraints.”

The festival is currently accepting submissions through Film Freeway (https://filmfreeway.com/HoustonHorrorFilmFestival) and is open to any film that has elements of horror or any of its sub genres such as slasher, supernatural, monsters, etc. The festival will also be accepting foreign films as long as they are accompanied with English subtitles. Refer to the rules on the website for all submission terms and guidelines.

Selections for the Houston Horror Film Festival are chosen by “a committee comprised of individuals involved in independent filmmaking or the genre,” with the goal of providing festival goers “with a group of films that are diverse in subject matter, have compelling stories, and that showcase the creativity and passion present in the indie horror film scene today.”

With festival founder Troy Escamilla having made two indie horror films himself, Party Night and Mrs. Clause (aka Stirring), as well as heading up the annual Fright Meter Awards, filmmakers and film watchers alike should be confident that Escamilla has the relationships necessary to create an informed selection committee that will produce a strong film lineup.

The festival will feature a variety of events including Q&A sessions with attending filmmakers after screenings and an awards ceremony honoring films and performances in several different categories.

Interested filmmakers or festival goers can find the film festival on Facebook or visit the website at http://www.houstonhorrorfilmfest.com for more information.
