In the riotous “Deadstream”, a disgraced influencer livestreams his descent into demonic chaos and battles more than just cancellation.
This week it’s Tiana’s choice, and she went with our first found footage horror flick on the Spookshow, “Deadstream” (2022)!
FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF:
In an age when influencers are more feared than poltergeists and livestreaming your trauma is practically a rite of passage, Deadstream emerges from the social media cesspit like a feral gremlin with a GoPro and something to prove. Written and directed by husband-and-wife team Joseph and Vanessa Winter, this deranged, kinetic found-footage flick drags the genre into the YouTube era—kicking, screaming, and racking up views.
And horror fans? We’re here for every glitchy, gory, grotesquely fun minute of it.
Our protagonist is disgraced YouTuber Shawn Ruddy (played with manic brilliance by Joseph Winter himself), whose brand is a cocktail of bro bravado and paranormal provocation. In a desperate bid for redemption and relevance, Shawn locks himself overnight in the most haunted house he can find. Armed with DIY ghost-hunting gear, a cascade of cameras, and an endless stream of cringe-inducing commentary, he sets out to face his fears and win back the hearts of his fanbase.
But when the spirits start to play by their own rules, Shawn finds himself less in control of the content and more in danger of becoming its final casualty.
Deadstream plays out like The Evil Dead if it were produced by Buzzfeed Unsolved and edited during a caffeine-fueled breakdown.
It’s riotously funny, genuinely creepy, and impressively self-aware—poking fun at influencer culture without ever losing touch with its deep reverence for horror.
The Winters channel their indie sensibilities into something that feels fresh and chaotic, yet lovingly referential. Fans of The Blair Witch Project, REC, and even Housebound will find echoes here—but Deadstream doesn’t just homage. It innovates.
The film’s effects are gloriously practical, gushing with blood, bile, and beautiful latex. The camera work is clever and frenetic without becoming nauseating—a small miracle in found-footage horror.
In a genre oversaturated with half-hearted jump scares and soulless franchise regurgitation, Deadstream is a rare beast: funny without being flippant, scary without being mean-spirited, and smart without ever condescending.
It’s the kind of film you show to your horror-loving friends with a gleam in your eye, knowing they’ll thank you (and maybe curse you) by the time it ends.
