The self-aware and campy “Rockula” is a unique entry in the vampire horror subgenre with its blend of horror, humor, romance, and rock music.

Our latest in the Cannon Fodder series is also in on the Sucky Summer of vampire flicks with “Rockula” (1990)!
FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF:
Rockula (1990) isn’t a typical horror film; it’s a horror-comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously. One of its most distinctive features is the film’s integration of rock music into the narrative. It also has a meta, self-aware quality that pokes fun at vampire tropes and the horror genre.
The plot centers on Ralph, a centuries-old vampire doomed to lose his love repeatedly, Mona, who is reincarnated every 22 years, only to die each time.
The narrative combines romance, fantasy, and comedy in a way that’s refreshingly different from more traditional vampire stories focused on gothic horror or seduction. Unlike the brooding, menacing vampires typical of the genre, Ralph is portrayed as a relatable, almost ordinary character.
He’s socially awkward, lives with his eccentric mother, and struggles with the burden of his curse. This everyman quality makes him an endearing and unique vampire protagonist.

The film also boasts a quirky ensemble cast, including Ralph’s flamboyant, undead mother and a bizarre villain who plays the bone xylophone. The characters add to the film’s eccentricity and humor.
Although released in 1990, Rockula is steeped in the aesthetics of the late 1980s, from fashion to music. The film’s low-budget special effects and set designs contribute to its campy appeal. Rather than detracting from the experience, these elements enhance its cult status, making it a fun, kitschy watch.
Over the years, Rockula has gained a cult following for its quirky humor, catchy soundtrack, and offbeat take on vampire lore.
The film embraces its weirdness, and this willingness to be different has endeared it to a niche audience.
You can watch Rockula on Prime Video.
