We dig into the late-‘60s oddity “Curse of the Crimson Altar”— a powerhouse cast in one of the least Lovecraftian “Lovecraft” adaptations.

Curse of the Crimson Altar

Curse of the Crimson Altar (1968) | 1 hr 27 min | Occult Horror

SYNOPSIS: In search of his missing brother, Robert Manning is led to a remote country house that he believes may be tied to the legend of the Black Witch.

This week, the Tubi Roulette Wheel demanded a sacrifice at the altar of Hammer Horror. We obey by descending into the eerie, fog-drenched world of Curse of the Crimson Altar (1968), a film that promises psychedelic thrills, a stacked genre cast, and a nod to Lovecraftian horror.

The film follows an antiques dealer who arrives at an ominous country manor looking for his missing brother, only to stumble upon a town suffering under the shadow of a witch’s curse, Lynchian-level psychedelic rituals, and dreamlike terror. With a loose connection to Lovecraft’s The Dreams in the Witch House, this film leans heavily on hypnotic visuals, unsettling dream sequences, and the strength of Lee and Karloff to make you forget to care about narrative shortcomings.

Join us as we break down the film’s wild visuals, gothic atmosphere, questionable choices, off-putting protagonist, and the powerhouse duo of two incomparable horror icons.

But that’s not all! We also offer some killer movie recommendations, debate the merits of Catnado, attempt a dramatic reading that goes wildly off the rails, and play a rousing game of Hammer Horror Mad Libs.

Join us as we sacrifice ourselves at the Crimson Altar for another unforgettable journey into Tubi’s most bizarre and psychedelic hidden horrors.

HAMMER HORROR BINGO

Alright, horror hounds and fiends of fright! Are you ready to elevate your Hammer Horror viewing experience to a whole new level of delightfully dreadful fun? Then grab your garlic, sharpen your stakes, and prepare for… Hammer Horror Bingo!

That’s right, gather your bravest (or most easily spooked) companions, dim the lights, and settle in for a night of classic British chills. As you bask in the glorious gothic atmosphere of your favorite Hammer Horror flick (or any Hammer-adjacent masterpiece!), keep your eyes peeled for those gloriously predictable tropes that make these films so utterly iconic. Think exposed cleavage that defies gravity, fog so thick you could spread it on toast, and hooded figures lurking in every shadowy corner.

To get you started on your thrilling bingo journey, we highly recommend firing up the wonderfully weird Curse of the Crimson Altar. And for this particular descent into cultish madness, we suggest using our specially crafted “Cult Horror” board!

But wait, there’s more! For those who dare to dial up the danger (and the potential for a truly memorable night), you can even transform this into a Hammer Horror Drinking Game! Just assign drinks to different bingo squares and prepare for a delightfully tipsy descent into cinematic terror. (Please drink responsibly, of course – we wouldn’t want you to end up like one of Dracula’s victims!)

So, what are you waiting for? Download your Hammer Horror Bingo cards now, gather your ghoul-friends, and let the games (and the screams) begin! Happy haunting!
