This week on the podcast, we attempt to peel back the layers from “Men”, Alex Garland’s complicated treatise on gender relations.

MEN (2022)

Carolyn tackles the controversial and highly polarizing MEN, a film that will keep anyone into critical analysis up at night trying to figure out what it all means — and will inevitably leave those who desire straightforward narratives and clear, conclusive endings feeling frustrated. Is it brilliant or baffling? Let’s discuss! – Stephanie (Editor-in-Chief)

SHOW NOTES FROM HOST CAROLYN SMITH-HILLMER:

Lions and tigers and men! Oh my! If you fell in love with Alex Garland during EX MACHINA, this movie will make or break your relationship with him.

Men is a 2022 folk horror film written and directed by Alex Garland. It stars Jessie Buckley as a widowed woman who travels on holiday to a countryside village but becomes disturbed and tormented by the strange men in the village, all portrayed by Rory Kinnear.

As always, this episode offers a deep dive into the film with plot-by-plot analysis. So, be sure to watch Men before listening if you’d like to avoid plot spoilers. Currently, it’s available to rent on most VOD platforms.

ABOUT THE SHOW:

The Final Girl on 6th Ave is a weekly show where host, Carolyn Smith-Hillmer, dissects an arthouse/elevated horror film. Each episode includes a detailed play-by-play of the film itself and a subsequent deep dive into the thematic elements and symbolism. Because elevated horror is sometimes viewed within the horror community as pretentious, Carolyn makes sure to use her down-to-earth tone and unique perspective to make these films less intimidating for the casual horror viewer and less ostentatious for the genre lover.
