It may be a dumb Hallmark holiday, but we have a bloody good time talking about 2009’s guilty pleasure slasher “My Bloody Valentine”.

Welcome to Guilty Pleasures, the show where we dive into the horror films we can’t help but devour…even if they do raise our cholesterol and expand our waistlines. These films may not be good for us, but they make us forget the misery of existence for just a little while.

And that’s especially important as we’re dealing with the horror of Valentine’s Day. Or, as douchebag Detective Axel Palmer aptly describes it: the stupidest fucking holiday a greeting card company ever invented.

That’s right, we’re talking about 2009’s campy 3D spectacle and 80s horror remake, MY BLOODY VALENTINE. We let our social media followers pick this month’s V-Day-themed episode, and it was a landslide 2-to-1 victory for MY BLOODY VALENTINE, beating out 2001’s VALENTINE.

Join us as we dive into the gory details, dissect all the highlights and lowlights, drool over Jensen Ackles, and ask, “Is this really a Guilty Pleasure?”

LISTEN NOW

Our cocktail of choice for this killer anti-love day episode is the easy-to-make and quite tasty ‘Bloody Valentine’. If you’d like to imbibe alongside us, here’s how to do it.

BLOODY VALENTINE COCKTAILS:

My Bloody Valentine Cocktail

Place 2 ounces of white rum, 3/4 ounces of peach schnapps, and 3 ounces of black cherry juice, along with 2 tsp Grenadine, in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake for about 10 seconds to mix—strain into a martini glass or pour over ice into a rocks glass with a sugared rim. Garnish with a fresh or maraschino cherry, if desired.

Be sure to join us on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, when we’ll be talking about Irish horror, either SHROOMS (2007) or STITCHES (2012).

ABOUT THE HOSTS:

KELLY MINTZER

Kelly loves all the cheese but not the ones you’d expect. A Cronenberg apologist until her dying breath, this Final Philly Girl likes her cats fat, her drinks blue, and would love it if you read her nonsense, both fictional and non.

JACK WELLS

Visionary. Award-Winner. Philanthropist. Social-Media Phenomenon. None of these terms pertain to Jack Wells, a burgeoning author located in northern Utah, and as a raging introvert with an abundance of shyness…he is totally ok with that! Refusing to stick with one genre, Jack writes whatever pops into his head, from historical thrillers to ethereal horror. Guilty Pleasures marks his first foray into podcast hosting. When not putting pen to paper or mouth to the microphone, Jack spends time with his sweet but quirky family, taking late-night road trips, enjoying a cigar, and sipping whiskey by his fire pit (because, as everyone knows, all work and no play…).

STEPHANIE MALONE

Morbidly Beautiful editor. Writer. Brooding Artist. Emo poet. A24 obsessessed arthouse apologist. President of the Nic Cage Fan Club. Rotten-Tomatoes film critic. The better half of the Cheer and Loathing podcast. She’s passionate about movies, good grammar, graphic design, and cats. This fiery redhead hails from Texas, but don’t hold that against her. Professional hustler by day, Love Witch by night. A rabid fan of both five-dollar and four-letter words.

ABOUT THE SHOW:

GUILTY PLEASURES is a reboot of the popular podcast on the Morbidly Beautiful network. When the show’s original host, Scott Murphy, decided to retire his jersey, he passed the torch to three new players: Morbidly Beautiful writers Stephanie Malone, Kelly Mintzer, and Jack Wells.

Each month, your hosts choose a new theme and place two modern Guilty Pleasure films up in a head-to-head battle. And you, the listener, get to decide who will be victorious. These films may not be all that great, at least by critical standards, but we can’t help but love them anyway. Whether we’re talking about so-bad-they’re-good turkeys or legitimately enjoyable but unfairly maligned masterpieces, we promise it will be a blast. We’ll also be enjoying themed cocktails you can imbibe right alongside us.

fBe sure to follow us on one or more of our social channels to see what we’ll be talking about next, help cast your vote, and get delicious drink recipes you can mix up at home to enjoy while you listen.
