1. What was the inspiration for starting your own business and how did you get started?

I’ve always been a creative person and dabbled in art my whole life. I mostly painted and wanted to expand. I started making mugs, and it just kept expanding.  The best part is that I get to incorporate my love for horror into making awesome things and supporting myself.

2. When and how did you fall in love with horror?

This is going to date me quite a bit, but I remember seeing Poltergeist on TV as a kid. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. My mom always was watching horror movies, and little did I know what an impact it would have on my life. I love the escape from reality you get while watching a great film.

3. Where does inspiration for your products come from? What is your creative process like?

Horror is such a broad genre that it feeds non stop creativity. I have several notebooks full of ideas of items I want to create.  My husband and I met and bonded over horror movies, and he helps me run the business. We bounce ideas off of each other all of the time, and it’s great to have a partner through all of this.

4. What’s the best part about running your own business, and what’s the hardest part?

I love working from home, in my pajamas, with my three dogs. I set my own hours. It’s great. The hardest part is it never ends. I don’t get to clock out. I think about business all of the time, I dream about it, I wake up and write myself notes and fall back asleep. I love it though!

5. Tell me why you think it’s important for people to support small business? Is it especially important for people to support female-owned business (if so, why)?

I feel good personally knowing I am help support someone’s dream. Someone I can actually talk to. Not a rich guy on vacation who could care less if I like the product I received. I want to be able to interact with businesses, and that is the huge bonus of deal with someone who cares and whose business is literally their life. As a woman owned business, we need to build each other up. There is enough negativity in the world.  Support each other, be happy for each other and help each other.

6. How can people follow/interact with you on social and purchase your products? And is there anything else you’d like to add or promote?

I have a store on Etsy with all of my products at merchmassacre.etsy.com.  I am on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter as merchmassacre and can be contacted at [email protected].  We do custom orders all of the time, so if you want something special feel free to contact me!
