Your Home for Horror

In honor of Pride Month, one of our writers will be hosting a special “High Tension” screening at Alamo Drafthouse Tempe to benefit a LGTBQ+ youth home.

High Tension

Partial sales of the screening will be donated to the Tempe nonprofit Mulligan’s Manor, which specializes in housing at-risk LGBTQ+ youth. Read more about this important event from host Danni Winn and find out how you can help.

“Danni, how would you like to host a night for Pride Month?” asked my Creative Director, Lauren, of the Phoenix area Alamo Drafthouse. She asked so casually that at first it didn’t register with me. Then it quickly sank in. And all I could blurt out was an emphatic, “Fuck yeah!” My mind raced wildly with the possibilities for the screening. After seriously thinking it over, I reached a natural decision.

On Thursday, June 13th at 8 p.m. in Tempe, Arizona (thanks to my management), we will celebrate Pride at the Drafthouse the best way I could imagine. We’ll be watching a horror flick with beer specials and raising funds for a good cause. A cause that I hope tugs at your heartstrings as much as mine.

Partial proceeds from ticket sales will go to Mulligan’s Manor, a group home focusing on the care and development of LGBTQ+ youths.

The Manor is only one of three in the entire country who lovingly lend these types of facilities. Here’s more about the Manor from their website:

Mulligan’s Manor is a loving and supportive group home dedicated to at-risk gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and heterosexual adolescents ranging from 12 to 17 years old. We are a family-oriented, LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Questioning, and Ally) community that nurtures and empowers our youth to reach their full potential, as well as provide tools for a safe and healthy life. A “Mulligan” is known by golfers as a second chance, or a “do-over”. Our mission is to give every member of our family the second chance to experience the love and respect he deserves.

Two things have had a lasting impact on me throughout my life. One of those is obviously my love of horror. The second is the fact that I had kind of a shit hand dealt to me when I was 10.

Needless to say, the latter has caused a nasty domino effect in my life. This childhood trauma began with a very long and very difficult journey through various institutions focusing on youth rehabilitation and housing.

Horror is what helped me survive, allowing my mind to escape.

Mulligan’s Manor is nothing like where I was warehoused, and I am so overwhelmed with joy that a place like this exists for kids who were just like me.

We will be playing one of my modern favorites, Alexandre Aja’s diabolical debut, High Tension.

Although the filmmaker himself isn’t ‘family’, he definitely offered a lesbian lead that wasn’t trite or engaged in gratuitous sexual behavior for the benefit of his film. Instead, High Tension literally delivers with an obscene amount of violence, terror, and oh yes, tension.

A dollar of every ticket purchased to this special screening will be given to Mulligan’s Manor. But that’s not all. 100% of the proceeds from the amazing raffle we will be doing at the event will also be headed their way. The raffle includes some incredible prizes donated to us by various actors, filmmakers, artists, shops and other very generous and supportive friends.

In addition, thanks once again to my wonderful Drafthouse management, we will have a special Mondo merch table set up outside the theater to raise more funds for this very deserving charity.

We are going all out to celebrate Pride in horrific fashion at the Drafthouse Tempe. But if you don’t live in the desert like I do,  you can still help support a great cause in one of two ways:
