Looking for great Thanksgiving horror? “Kristy” is an underrated survival thriller that blends holiday isolation with relentless terror.

We gather around the table for Thanksgiving with a new friend, Phil from “The Spook House Podcast”! We talk Tiana’s choice this week with “Kristy” (2014).

FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF:

The 2014 film Kristy, directed by Oliver Blackburn, is an underrated gem that blends the slasher and home-invasion subgenres with a modern survival-horror twist. Starring Haley Bennett as the resourceful protagonist Justine, the film pits her against a group of sadistic killers in a cat-and-mouse game set on an eerily abandoned college campus during Thanksgiving break.

Thanksgiving horror films are relatively rare compared to other holidays, and Kristy captures the essence of the season by playing on the isolating, quiet atmosphere of a deserted campus. Justine, a student who couldn’t afford to travel home for the holidays, finds herself alone in a sprawling college setting that feels simultaneously cozy and unnervingly vulnerable. The sense of seasonal solitude amplifies the film’s tension, turning what should be a peaceful break into a harrowing fight for survival.

For horror fans looking for something thematically tied to Thanksgiving without the turkey or family drama, Kristy provides an effective backdrop for a holiday where being alone feels particularly haunting.

Released under the radar in 2014, Kristy was a part of Blumhouse’s penchant for low-budget, high-concept thrillers.

While it didn’t receive a wide theatrical release, it gained traction through streaming platforms, where its tension and stylized aesthetic found a cult following.

The film’s antagonists—a cult-like group of killers who target women they deem “Kristy” (a moniker associated with privilege and goodness)—are particularly menacing, combining ritualistic motivations with chilling anonymity. Their use of technology to stalk and document their victims makes the threat feel unsettlingly contemporary.

The screenplay by Anthony Jaswinski (The Shallows) delivers a lean, efficient narrative. It doesn’t waste time on unnecessary subplots, instead immersing viewers in Justine’s perspective as she goes from prey to predator.

Kristy is a survival thriller that stands out for its simplicity and execution. It avoids excessive gore in favor of psychological tension and action-packed confrontations. Its thematic exploration of class differences and the vulnerabilities of being alone in the modern world resonates, especially for college students or young adults. The blend of visceral thrills with moments of quiet dread makes it a compelling watch.

For a holiday where people gather with family, Kristy reminds us of the terror of being alone—and why survival is the ultimate triumph.
