“Severance” is a 2006 cult classic that balances laughs and scares in a twisted tale of corporate team-building gone terribly wrong.

This week, it’s Will’s pick, and he went with the 2006 horror comedy SEVERANCE.
FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF:
Severance, directed by Christopher Smith and co-written by Smith and James Moran, tells the story of a group of British and Canadian co-workers who go to a remote mountain forest in Hungary, where they become victims of murderous attacks by a group of poachers. It’s a cult favorite that skillfully blends dark humor with genuine scares.
Key strengths include clever writing with sharp, witty dialogue, an effective balance of horror and comedy elements, strong ensemble cast performances, and creative and often gruesome kill scenes.
The film stands out in the horror-comedy genre for its satirical take on corporate culture. It uses the team-building premise to heighten both the humor and tension. It delivers a delightful level of self-awareness, with nods to classic slasher tropes, while still subverting expectations.

The movie’s dark humor doesn’t undermine the genuine scares, creating a uniquely satisfying experience for genre enthusiasts.
Its British sensibilities are reminiscent of Edgar Wright’s work, and its commentary on globalization and war profiteering shines. The film’s pacing and atmosphere build tension effectively, punctuated by moments of explosive violence and absurd comedy.
While it wasn’t a blockbuster hit and has flown largely under the radar, it’s intelligent, creative, and gory, with a strong ability to deliver both laughs and chills.
You can watch Severance on Tubi.
