“Shadow of the Vampire” is a standout of the genre, blending horror with a thoughtful exploration of the nature of art and obsession.

Shadow of the Vampire

The last movie selection during the Sucky Summer is up to The Professor, and he went with “Shadow of the Vampire” (2000), the fictional making of 1922’s horror classic “Nosferatu”!

FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF:

Shadow of the Vampire is a period vampire Gothic mystery film directed by E. Elias Merhige and written by Steven Katz. It’s a horror classic for several reasons, combining elements of horror, dark comedy, and historical fiction in a unique and engaging way.

The film presents a fictionalized account of the making of the classic silent horror film Nosferatu, directed by F. W. Murnau. It speculates that the film’s lead actor, Max Schreck, who plays the vampire Count Orlok, was actually a real vampire. This blending of fact and fiction creates a fascinating “what if?” scenario that intrigues audiences.

Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of Max Schreck is particularly noteworthy. He brings a mix of menace, humor, and pathos to the role, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. John Malkovich also delivers a compelling performance as the obsessive director Murnau, whose determination to create his masterpiece leads him to make a literal Faustian bargain.

Merhige’s direction captures the eerie and unsettling atmosphere of early 20th-century cinema while also paying homage to Nosferatu‘s visual style.

The film is shot with a period-appropriate aesthetic, using lighting, set design, and cinematography that evoke the feeling of a silent horror film. It explores themes of artistic obsession, the boundaries of reality and fiction, and the ethics of filmmaking — offering a commentary on the nature of cinema itself, particularly the horror genre.

By blurring the lines between actor and character, the film delves into how deeply the horror genre taps into primal fears and what it means to portray something so convincingly that it becomes real, even if only temporarily.

You can rent Shadow of the Vampire on Amazon Video.
