Celebrated Italian Filmmaker Davide Melini Pays Homage to Giallo in His Upcoming Horror Short Deep Shock
I was recently contacted by Italian screenwriter and director Davide Melini who shared details regarding his latest project, the short horror/thriller DEEP SHOCK. Melini is considered one of the most promising Italian horror filmmakers, having worked alongside the legendary Dario Argento on Mother of Tears: The Third Mother. He also worked as an Assistant Director on the television series Rome (2005), Penny Dreadful (2014) and Into the Badlands (2015).
DEEP SHOCK attempts to pay tribute to the Italian film genre called “giallo” (thrilling). The title is inspired by the most famous horror movies of two of the most important Italian directors: Dario Argento (Deep Red) and Mario Bava (Shock).
Synopsis: Sarah can’t completely overcome the deaths of her grandfather and her older sister. The trauma and lack of sleep cause her to embark on a strange journey of apparitions and murders, apparently caused by her mind.
BIG NAMES worked alongside writer/director Melini in this short film. It was produced by Luca Vannella (“Avengers”, “Thor”, “Harry Potter”, “Apocalypto”, “Heart of the Sea”), Alexis Continente (Murder on the Orient Express”, “Transformers: The Last Knight”, “Thor”), Vincenzo Mastrantonio (“Titanic”, “Moulin Rouge”, “The Passion of Christ”, “Romeo + Juliet”), Bobby Holland (“The Dark Knight Rises”, “Game of Thrones”, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”, “007 – Quantum of Solace”), Ferdinando Merolla (“Troy”, “Gangs of New York”, “Hannibal Rising”), and Roberto Paglialunga.
The film stars Muireann Bird, Francesc Pagès, George Bracebridge, Lorna Larkin, Erica Prior, and Luis Fernández de Eribe.
As a huge fan of Italian horror, I was thrilled to hear about this project. And, after seeing the trailer (below), I can honestly say this is easily one of my most anticipated short films of 2017.
